The North Market, Columbus OH
Looking for fun weekend plans in downtown Columbus? The Short North is the perfect place for shopping at cute boutiques and local restaurants and places to eat. A short lunch with friends is a great idea, especially at the North Market across form the Convention Center. The North Market is an indoor market full of 35 vendors local to central Ohio.
Last weekend, my family and I visited the Convention Center for a dance competition and the North Market for a fun lunch. The great thing about the market is that there is food for everybody. Whatever you're craving: pretzels, Belgian waffles, Indian cuisine, pizza, sushi or ice cream, it's all there!
I chose my meal from Hot Chicken Takeover, located upstairs with additional seating. I was super impressed with how much food I got for $12. I was able to get iced sweet tea, homemade cole slaw, mac n cheese, a chicken breast (boneless) with bread and pickles. There was house made ranch and sweet syrup for dipping sauces, and I chose the super creamy ranch to dip my chicken in. It was absolutely delicious with my well spiced chicken. I had the "cold" flavored chicken breast, while my mom chose the "warm" flavor. Both were on the mild side, my mom's having a bit more of a kick to it. Almost 60% of Hot Chicken Takeover's staff has experienced homelessness or poverty and obtains a philosophy of giving adults a second chance at employment, which I found as a unique restaurant story that they share with customers.
For dessert, I chose a mocha donut from Destination Donuts. The donut itself was made from a dense cake. Dipped in a mocha glaze and topped off with a chocolate drizzle, my donut was a great treat to eat after my lunch! It was rich enough that I could only eat half, and then eat the other half for breakfast the next day. Destination Donuts recently won "Donut Showdown" on the cooking channel and are on the bottom level of the market across from the Taste of Belgium. Their donuts are made fresh daily and have different flavors each day. Some of the flavors are wacky, but there is always something delicious that every person would like. For example, my mom chose the lemon blueberry donut and my brother chose the Oreo chocolate flavored donut.
My family and I had a great afternoon at the North Market, and I definitely will try to come back and try something new! I would 10/10 recommend both Destination Donuts and Hot Chicken Takeover.
